Batticalo Polls:

March 10: Red Letter Day for Vakarai

The sleepy coastal town of Vakarai is all set for Monday's Local Government election after a lapse of 17 years, to elect their own representatives to the Koralaipattu North Pradeshiya Sabha. Authorities say that elections were last held in Vakarai in 1991 and since then people of the area has never been part of the election process.

Speaker to apprise President of members views on CC

Speaker W.J.M. Lokubandara yesterday told Parliament that he will take steps to apprise the President on yesterday's proceedings in Parliament pertaining to the appointment of the Constitutional Council. The Speaker made this pledge in the midst of a debate which commenced after the Chief Opposition Whip Joseph Michael Perera made a special statement on the appointment of the CC.

PAFFREL case dismissed

The Supreme Court yesterday dismissed the Petition filed by the People's Action Committee for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL) without considering it for examination after Elections Commissioner Dayanada Dissanayake told Court that he had received no complaints about armed groups roaming about in Batticaloa or the misappropriation of public property for election work, during the Local Government polls campaign.
