Troops capture 1 km stretch in Mannar

Tiger cross loading point overrun:

The LTTE suffered yet another setback yesterday when troops attached to the 58 Division operating on the Mannar front further advanced towards Tiger held territory overrunning their cross loading point in Uyilankulam and a key position in Palakkuli East, inflicting heavy damages to the outfit.

Indian police cripple

The arrest of two Sri Lankan Tamils in Tamil Nadu on charges of making a huge boat for the Tigers has crippled for now their bid to stealthily make sea-worthy vessels in India. One of the men caught Monday in a sweep involving sleuthing by the Intelligence Bureau and Tamil Nadu Police is related to a leader of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, Home Ministry sources said.

March 10: Red Letter Day for Vakarai

The sleepy coastal town of Vakarai is all set for Monday's Local Government election after a lapse of 17 years, to elect their own representatives to the Koralaipattu North Pradeshiya Sabha. Authorities say that elections were last held in Vakarai in 1991 and since then people of the area has never been part of the election process.

Apparel workers well looked after

The average maintenance cost per worker in the local apparel sector is three times higher than other countries in the region. CEO of Orit Apparels Lanka (Pvt) Ltd and Board member, BOI Channa P. Palansuriya said comparing with other countries in the region local apparel industry bears the highest average of maintaining cost per worker. "The average maintaining cost per worker is USD 150 to USD 200 in Sri Lanka and this is USD 60 in countries like Bangladesh and China," he said.
