New chapter in Lanka-Maldives ties
Maldivian President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom arrived
in Sri Lanka on a two-day State visit yesterday, signifying a new
chapter in the close relationship between the two SAARC nations.
President Gayoom and First Lady Nasrina Gayoom were warmly received
at the Bandaranaike International Airport by President Mahinda
Rajapaksa and First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa. He was then accorded a
21-Gun Salute and a Military Guard of Honour.
Thalladi Church destroyed in Tiger attack
The LTTE yesterday launched a barrage of
artillery towards Thalladi in Mannar destroying the highly venerated
St. Sebastian Catholic Church, Mannar, Military Spokesman Brigadier
Udaya Nanayakkara told the Daily News."The LTTE fired 15 rounds of
130 mm artillery towards the Church premise around 9 a.m. yesterday
causing heavy damage to the Church," the Brigadier added.
India will leave no room for Lanka's division - Indian
Visiting Indian Commerce Minister Jairam Ramesh
who called on the Mahanayake of the Malwatta Chapter Most
Ven.Thibottuwawe Sri Siddhartha Sumangala Thera yesterday reassured
that India will not leave any room for division or creation of a
separate state within Sri Lanka.
