MAS Kandurata stay unbeaten, meet Wayamba on Sunday
Chris DHAMBARAGE
MAS Kandurata Eleven cruised to their fourth straight victory while
outplaying the Lanka Bell Wayamba Eleven in their rain hit SLT ‘Five
Elevens’ Inter Provincial limited overs cricket tournament match worked
off at the Welagedera Stadium in Kurunegala yesterday.
The unbeaten Kandurata Eleven who had booked their place in the final
even before this game bowled out their opponents for a paltry 79 runs
and then reached their target with 12 overs to spare.
Even then again the two teams qualified to play in Sunday’s final as
the other fixture between Lexmark Basnahira South Eleven and the
Hirdramani Ruhuna Eleven was washed out due to heavy rain at the Galle
International Stadium.
In fact Wayamba Eleven and Basnahira North Eleven finished with 10
points each at the completion of their four games but the former went
through to the final thanks to a superior net run rate.
MAS Kandurata Eleven spearheaded by Sri Lanka vice captain Kumar
Sangakkara completed their task in a spectacular manner as they topped
the final points table while collecting their second bonus point of the
competition.
They produced another brilliant performance on the field to skittle
out Wayamba Eleven for the lowest total of the tournament after they had
won the toss and decided to field.
The two opening bowlers Akalanka Ganegama and Kaushalya Weeraratne
played havoc with the Wayamba Eleven batting after overnight rain had
reduced the game to 31 overs per side.
Wayamba Eleven made a complete mess of the situation as they lost
wickets regularly and were eventually bowled out for 79 runs in 20.5
overs. Jehan Mubarak was the only batsman to enter double figures and
contributed almost half of that total with an unbeaten knock of 36 from
47 deliveries inclusive of four boundaries.
Wayamba Eleven were virtually out of the contest after they had lost
half of the side for just 54 runs by the 12th over of the innings
including their captain Mahela Jayawardena for a second ball duck.
Ganegama and Weeraratne did the initial damage before Thilina Thushara
Mirando polished off the tail with a four wicket haul.
