President Mahinda Rajapaksa urged all Heads of State Corporations to
perform a more exemplary service with diligence and commitment to make
the envisaged goals of the Mahinda Chintana Ten year Plan’ a reality.
In a bid to expound and clarify the Government’s future plans and
duties and responsibilities bestowed on the Corporation Heads by the
Government, President Rajapaksa addressing the Corporation Heads at the
Presidential Secretariat on Thursday, said these heads were an
indispensable and significant fraternity to the Government which has
fulfilled its obligations to them from their side.
“You too are called upon to fulfil your bounden duties and
responsibilities to your Motherland. You are finally answerable to the
people whom you serve, and obliged to show proof of your achievements to
them.
We would be a victorious lot, only if we are a profit generating
institution, viable and capable of continuing in business with our own
profits,” he said.
He underscored the importance of working with a proper understanding,
co-ordination and liaison with the line Minister and the relevant public
officials and pointed out that sans such an approach, things have gone
wrong in certain instances in the past. that has had a detrimental
impact on Governments.
“The nation does not need ‘Opportunist Chairmen’ who work only to
‘serve their skin’. They fall short of being truly people-oriented and
pragmatic. They fail to view things from a people’s perspective in such
instances as when the Cost of Living rises. Some Chairmen are not
punctual and don’t remain in their offices even for 45 minutes,” he
said.
He reiterated that they ought to be efficient, persevering, dedicated
and sensitive in the wake of a financial crisis the country is plunged
into at present. They are obliged to deliver the envisaged service to
the people and country.
Nevertheless, he said, “everyone has the option of working together
with the Government or else leaving it, at his or her own discretion”.
