Sustainable energy future needs unprecedented global cooperation
World Energy Congress 2007 - Rome, Italy:
Achievement of a sustainable energy future requires an unprecedented
level of global cooperation between industry and government and deeper
integration of regional and international markets. The actions during
the next few years will determine the long term future of the world
energy system.
This was transpired at the 20th World Energy Congress 2007 held in
Rome, Italy from November 11-15. Its theme was ‘The Energy Future in an
Interdependent World’ with the participation of over three thousand
delegates.
The conference is organised every three years by the World Energy
Council (WEC), the largest world body of the energy industry
representing both the governments and the private sector in 96
countries.
WEC mission is to promote sustainable supply and use of energy for
the benefit of all.
The London-based organisation has official consultative status with
the United Nations. Sri Lanka is a founder member of WEC established in
1923. The Sri Lanka delegation to the Congress consisted of Vice
Chairman Professor Priyantha Wijayatunga and Secretary of the WEC Sri
Lanka Member Committee Shavindranath Fernando.
