Survey on marine debris

COLOMBO: The Marine Pollution Prevention Authority has planned to conduct a survey on Marine Debris around the Southern Coast.

This survey will be conducted monthly on a selected ocean stretch extending to about 200 metres off the coastline in Hambantota, Galle and Matara districts and Beruwala, said a press release issued by the Environment and Natural Resources Ministry.

The survey would enable the Authority to assess the amount of marine debris collected due to human activities on land and sea, their effects on the environment and use the data so collected to draw up policies to minimise marine pollution in future.
