JHU helps Government's humanitarian programme
COLOMBO: The Jathika Hela Urumaya yesterday said that they will
support the Government as long as it continues its humanitarian
programme to liberate the country from terrorism while upholding the
Propaganda Secretary of Jathika Hela Urumaya, Nishantha Warnasinghe
said that they support the Government on the ground that has already
proved its commitment towards defeating terrorism with unprecedented
success by liberating the Eastern Province from the grip of the LTTE.
"The present Government has been able to minimize unnecessary
pressures being exerted upon us by international community," he said.
"The main reason for extending our unequivocal support to the Government
is that it has proved that it is capable of defeating LTTE terrorism, a
fact that one could not say for the former UNP regime," he said.
Commenting on the country's current economic situation, Warnasinghe
said that the prices of several essential items have gone up owing to
various reasons, but one must realize that this is not the main issue
that the country has to deal with at this juncture.
"The situation can get worse with a UNP Government, which would put
the country's sovereignty and territorial integrity at stake for petty
political gains by dancing to the tune of the LTTE terrorists and the
international community," he pointed out.
"The people have economic difficulties, but not to the extent that
people die on the streets. Our request to the Government is to minimise
corruption and take legal steps against the culprits responsible for
such corruption," he said.
"No one in the Government can meddle with the "unitary State" because
the people have given them a mandate to preserve the country's unitary
State," he added.
"Moreover, we do not think that by toppling the government, a
solution could be found to the country's burning problems," he said. "We
believe that a UNP Government could not provide solutions to the
problems and it will complicate things," he said.
