Eastern elections before year end

Settlement to ethnic problem must be long lasting and acceptable to all, says President:

Eastern Province elections will be held before the end of the year, President Mahinda Rajapaksa said. “We will demonstrate the viability of a Tamil-Sinhala-Muslim partnership. In any peace settlement I have to carry the Sinhala voters with me. I cannot unilaterally impose a settlement - it has to be the outcome of a political process - an outcome that must be long-lasting and acceptable to the people,” President Rajapaksa in an interview published in the News Post India.

Dodd's report for Commission of Inquiry

Disaster Management and Human Rights Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe has requested the Attorney-General's Department to place the supplementary report of the Australian forensic pathologist, Dr. Malcolm Dodd, before the Commission of Inquiry investigating the killings of the 17 Action Contr la Faim in August 2006.

Yala open till September 15

Water not an issue this year:

THE Yala National Park which is usually closed for visitors from August 31 will remain open till September 15 this year. On a request by the Sri Lanka Tourist Board Chairman, the Wild life Conservation Director General has approved to keep the park open for visitors.

Holcim to invest US $ 20m

HOLCIM Sri Lanka will invest up to 20 million USD within next three years to meet the growing market demand for cement in Sri Lanka. The Managing Dir-ector Holcim Sri Lanka Peter Spirig, speaking to the Daily News Business said that Holcim Sri Lanka can keep up with the pace each year by using the capacity available with them.
