Lankan bowlers improve on rankings

CRICKET: Sri Lankan bowlers have made a significant impact while their batsmen have dropped in the latest International Cricket Council one day international player rankings after the team's three nil series win against the touring Bangladesh team.

However the clean sweep of the three match one day international series have also helped Sri Lanka to draw level with Pakistan on 111 rating points in the ICC one day international championship table.

Speed star Lasith Malinga have moved up four places in the bowling rankings after taking four wickets in two one day matches and he now occupies the ninth position overall. Malinga replaced Bangladesh's Abdur Razzak, who dropped three places to the 12th place but still remains his country's highest ranked bowler.

Two other Sri Lankan seamers Farveez Maharoof and Dilhara Fernando have also made profound improvements in the latest table. The fast bowlers have climbed 10 places each with Maharoof sharing the 22nd position with India's Zaheer Khan and Fernando now occupies the 34th place.

However as the Sri Lanka bowlers have made the best of the series against Bangladesh the same cannot be said for the team's batsmen as the experienced trio of Sanath Jayasuriya, Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara have all dropped down the ICC Player Rankings for batsmen.

Jayasuriya, who scored 53 runs in the series slipped one place and is now ranked 15th while Jayawardene has fallen four places to 16th after managing only 29 runs. Sangakarra's 40 runs in the series has cost him three places and he now stands at 20th in the overall list.

Although Jayasuriya failed in his batting the veteran all rounder has now bounced up two places in the ICC Player Ranking for one day international all rounders.

Jayasuriya who became the first player to score 12,000 runs and take 300 one day international wickets during the second match has pushed Chris Gayle of West Indies and England's Andrew Flintoff into fourth and fifth places respectively in the table.
