No change in ordinary letter rate

COLOMBO: Postal rates will be revised from tomorrow.

There will be no change in the base postal rate of Rs.5.00 for ordinary letters, the Postal Department said.

The new rates are: Business mail (30 grammes or part thereof) ; Rs.15, Postcard - Rs.4, Open letters - Rs.4.50, Registration fee - Rs.25, Telegraphic money order standing fee - Rs.10.

The Department said it was compelled to raise the rates in some categories to cover increasing day-to-day expenditure including wages, transport and stationery costs, rents, transport and fuel charges and miscellaneous services.

The Department said it would still incur losses as it costs more than Rs.8 to deliver an ordinary letter when considering these costs.

It has also started a Business Mail service for the business community which will also be run on a non-profit basis. This will be a boon for the business community, the Department said.
