New services to enhance postal service

COLOMBO: Arrangements are being made to introduce new systems by the Postal Department to develop the Posts and Telecommunications sector.

The Postal Department is to introduce national express mail, EMS, international express mail, post fax service, Fax money order service, retail post service, business mail and the telemail service under this programme.

The national express mail system is expected to deliver mail and parcels within the country in 24 hours. The mail addressed within Colombo and suburbs will be delivered within two hours.

EMS express mail covers over 61 countries and more than 5,000 destinations. Mails and parcels are expected to be delivered to the exact destination within three to six days. But this service will not be available for uninsured jewellery, gems, illicit medicine or liquor, animals or parts of animals, explosives and arms.

The Post fax service will be available as an efficient and trusted fax service. People can send documents through any post office. The fax money order system will also will offer a trusted and quick service.

The retail post service will serve more than 100 institutions and the business service has been introduced exclusively for business personnel who use the post extensively. The telemail service will be available at all Post Offices through the telephone network.
