by R.M. Ratnayake, Kandy South Spl. A housing project for tsunami victims, a concept conceived in the mind of Ven. Wattegama Dammawasa Thera, the chief monk for the Sri Subodharama Buddhist Centre, Peradeniya and Sri Lankaramaya in Brisbane, Australia has been launched by the Sasana Seva Society of the above centre as well as the Sri Lankaramaya of Brisbane in Australia. The aim of the project is to build 100 houses out of which 25 will be built within the first stage. The inauguration work of the first stage was ceremoniously started on February 20. The High Commissioner for Australia and the Chief Minister for the Sabaragmuwa Province were present on this occasion. A large number of religious dignitaries and distinguished lay personnel too were present. This project is cited at Siribopura (Gonnoruwa) in Hambantota. It is estimated that the building cost of a house to some extent would exceed Rs, 400,000. Arrangements are now in progress to complete the building work of all the 25 houses by April 10 and immediately there-after settle 25 families. Arrangements are also being made to build 25 more houses at Hikkaduwa Monaravia Estate and that is going to be the second stage of this house building project. |
