Dry rations for tsunami victims

Under the instructions of his Holiness Al Haj Ash Sheikh Afdhalul Ulema Dr Thaika Shu'aib Alim, the spiritual head of Aroosiyyathul Quadhiriyyah World Sufistic Order dry rations were distributed among the tsumani victims at Gintota, Katugoda and Hambantota by the Aroosiyathul Qadriya Association of Sri Lanka.

His Holiness also invokes the blessings of Almighty Allah for the victims and prays for peace, harmony and prosperity in the country.

Messages of condolence from international community

Following letters and messages of condolence were received from world leaders and governments on the devastation caused by the tidal waves.

More houses for tsunami victims

The President of the Jathika Arakshaka Seva Padanama - Matale Nandimithra Ekanayake said one thousand houses for tsunami victims will be built undev a special programme launched by the foundation. He said fifty houses will be completed at the first stage and work is already commenced.

There are many donors, said Ekanayake. Matale Provincial Council Matala District Sasanarakshaka Mandalaya Traders Association and several other philanthropists are helping us in our generous work. He also said Central Bank - Matale Branch has agreed to build one house.

Kaludewala central workshop reactivated

Kaludewala CTB Central Workshop which had been hovering with inactivity once again activated by the Minister of Transport Felix Perera. The workshop which was only second to the Orugodawatta Central Workshop was under the management of the Matale CTB depot faced severe deterioration.

This workshop with modern equipment and experienced engineers and mechanics were rather disgusted by the treatment they got from every government and politicizing the Institution, said a trade union representative.

The Deputy Minister of Samurdhi and Poverty Alleviation Rohana Dissanayake having come to know the existing situation had discussions with the Minister of Transport has able to reactivate the workshop.

Indian danseuse at Bishop's College

Noted Indian Bharatha Natyam danseuse Ms. Priyadarsini Govind will be performing in Colombo today at the Bishop's College auditorium for the benefit of the children affected by tsunami.

Ms. Priyadarsini Govind and her troupe's visit to Colombo has been sponsored by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations, New Delhi. This is part of the ongoing post-tsunami relief assistance provided by the Government of India to the people of Sri Lanka.

Pensioners' Federation raises funds for tsunami rehabilitation

Sri Lanka Pensioners' National Societies Federation had initiated a Tsunami Distress Fund.

The Federation appeals the pensioners inslandwide to contribute a month's salary increase which was given to them by the budget 2005 for the Fund.

There are nearly 400,000 pensioners and the Federation wishes to collect at least Rs. 10 million for the Fund.

The Federation had made arrangements to hand over the money of the Fund to the Government Tsunami Distress Fund through the President at the end of February.

The Federation appeals the pensioners to send their contributions by checks or Money Orders, to receive Tsunami Distress Fund. Sri Lanka Pensioners National Societies Federation, Samanpaya, Watapotha. The Money Orders should be sent to be cashed from Watapotha post office. The contributions should be received before February 28.

New education centre at NYSC for youth

An education Aid and Infrastructure Centre for the students and the youth who are engaged in higher and technology education is scheduled to be declared open at the National Youth Service Council premises on February 9 at 3 p.m. under the patronage of Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Jeevan Kumaratunga. This is a project proposed by the Skill Development Project sponsored by the Asian Development Bank.

Twelve such centres will be established islandwide. There are a few centres already established at Naula, Polgolla, Rikillagaskada and Mirigama.

The centres will be equipped with all facilities with Internet, computers and E-mail.

Schoolchildren of higher grades and school leavers can get registered themselves in the NYSC and get full use of the institution.

The project costs Rs. 2.5 million. This is a project launched by the Skill Development Project sponsored by the Asian Development Bank.

YMBA annual pirith pinkama

The annual pinkama of the YMBA Dehiwala, Mt. Lavinia will be held on February 4 and 5 at the Bauddha Mandiraya, Dehiwala.

This will include an all-night pirith chanting on Friday, February 4 commencing at 08.30 p.m. followed by a Sangika Dana to 20 Bikkhus the next day.

The Board of Directors of the YMBA wishes to invite all residents in the area to participate. This is the 87th Anniversary of the Dehiwala-Mt.Lavinia. YMBA.
