SB indicted before High Court under Bribery Act

Former UNP Minister S.B. Dissanayake, now serving two years rigorous imprisonment on a charge of contempt of Court was yesterday served indictment before Colombo High Court Judge Rohini Perera by the official of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption, under the Bribery Act.

Dissanayake is charged being a Minister and a MP of the previous regime had earned several immoveable and moveable properties from March 31, 1995 to September 30, 2001 and Dissanayake had spent about Rs. 29 million more than his known income.

When the charge was read out to Dissanayake, he pleaded not guilty to the charge preferred against him under the Bribery Act.

The trial against Dissanayake was fixed for June 27, 2005.

On an application by President's Counsel Ananda Wijesekera, senior counsel for Dissanayake, Judge Perera directed Dissanayake to stand on the same bail ordered by the Colombo Chief Magistrate and Additional District Judge Sarojini Kusala Weerawardena.

Earlier, Judge Weerawardena ordered Dissanayake to furnish cash bail in a sum of Rs. 25,000 and a bond of Rs. 10 million with two sureties.

Under the Prison Ordinance, Court allowed Dissanayake to consult his (Dissanayake's) lawyers regarding his bribery case before the Colombo High Court.

Ms. Yasanthi Wijewardena, Legal Officer of the Bribery Department appeared for the prosecution.

President's Counsel Ananda Wijesekera, President's Counsel Shinli Assiz, President's Counsel Srinath Perera, Upul Jayasuriya, Kolitha Dharmawardena, Ronald Perara, Dulind Weerasuriya, Lal Kularatne, Chandana Perera, Niroshana Perera, Mahesh Kalugampitiya, Gamini Dharmadasa, Mohan Sellaperuma, Shehan Cooray instructed by Samararatne Associates appeared for Dissanayake.
