President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga on Wednesday paid a surprise visit to Galle town to meet the people affected by the tsunami catastrophe. Here the President greets the people at the Galle bus stand. Southern Province Governor Kingsley T. Wickremeratne, Skill Development Minister Piyasena Gamage and Southern Province Chief Minister Shan Wijayalal were also present.

Anura at press conference:

Tourism will soon regain its bounce

Minister of Industries, Investment Promotion and Tourism Anura Bandaranaike said that investors who have made commitments to invest in Sri Lanka before the Tsunami would be allowed to go ahead with their proposals. "The proposed 100 metre buffer zone would not have any negative implication on these investors who had already received BOI approval," he said.

Ceylon had its first tsunami experience in 1883

The first phenomena now identified as the tsunami was first experienced by Sri Lanka then Ceylon on August 27, 1883. The Ceylon Observer through its correspondents re-capped the phenomenon in vivid detail in the Ceylon Observer Editions of August 28 and 29, 1883.
