Rs. 9 billion for Tsunami food programme

.The first consignment of Tsunami welfare coupons were handed over to the Governor of the Southern Province Kingsley T. Wickramaratne by the Secretary, of Public Security Law and Order Thilak Ranaviraja on the direction of President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga.

They were distributed to the Matara districts, Hambantota districts, Ampara, Batticaloa, Trincomalee and Jaffna. The coupon card contains coupons for 32 weeks.

Every week a person is entitled to Rs. 375 of goods and they can obtain goods such as rice, sugar, dhal, soap, wheat, milk food and kerosene. Every person in the family is entitled to a coupon card and a family of 4 will receive goods worth Rs. 5000 per month.

The total cost for the 750,000 people for an 8 month period will be in the range of Rs. 9 billion.
