The "Helping Hambantota" programme initiated to reconstruct and rebuild the tsunami devastated houses will commence today at the auspicious hour 10.39 a.m. at Hambantota under the patronage of President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse, the Prime Minister's Office said yesterday. This programme is the outcome of the efforts made under the leadership of President to solicit the help of the local and international communities, in the task of rebuilding the nation in the aftermath of the tsunami catastrophe. The total number of houses engulfed by the tsunami in the Hambantota district alone totals up to 6,463. The following organizations have already signed MoUs with "helping Hambantota" to rebuild and reconstruct these properties. Ceylon Red Cross Organization, PLAN Sri Lanka, Caliers International, Small Scale Fisheries Federation, World Vision, Soma Edirisinghe and Janasarana Community Relief Services, Becket Tsunami Rehabilitation and Reconstruction, New Cine Oska Foundation, Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council, Green Movement of Sri Lanka, German Technical Corporation, D.A. Rajapaksha Memorial Foundation, Therawada Samadhi Education and TZU, CIZ Foundation. The above organizations have pledged to construct 4000 houses in keeping with government approved standard, on sites selected by the district secretary. |
