The Japanese Government will send a 16 member mission to Sri Lanka through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in response to a request from the Sri Lanka Government to assess the rehabilitation needs in the areas devastated by the recent tsunami disaster which caused severe damages to human lives, infrastructure, private and public properties and economic activities in the country. The mission will be in the country from January 17 to February 9. The mission consists officials and experts from government ministries and JICA with expertise in sea coast protection and tsunami disaster reduction and disaster management systems, building structure, port and coastal disaster prevention and shore protection, road and bridge rehabilitation, fishing village restoration, sociology, health, etc., the Embassy of Japan said yesterday. The objectives of the mission are to assist in the preparation of a quick and effective relief and rehabilitation plan which could be implemented for utilising the US $80 million grant aid for Sri Lanka pledged by Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi at the recent Tsunami Summit in Jakarata and to identify urgent and mid-term rehabilitation and reconstruction projects that JICA could assist in order to bring normalcy in the tsunami affected areas by supporting the rehabilitation efforts of the Sri Lankan government. The mission will also share experiences with the Sri Lankan Government officials pertaining to Japanese experiences in disaster management to assist them in preparedness in future calamities. The mission will visit ravaged areas of Ampara, Batticaloa, Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu, Trincomalee, Galle, Matara and Hambantota and will have meetings with institutions involved in the rehabilitation work in the various sectors. The mission will work closely with the donors involved in the tsunami relief and rehabilitation operations including Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC), the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank's Joint Needs Assessment Team. |
