IGP orders relocation of tsunami hit police stations

by Sarath Malalasekera

Inspector General of Police Chandra Fernando who visited Trincomalee yesterday morning with a team of Police personnel including Welfare Officials inspected the affected Police stations in the area and ordered immediate relief to the 11 Police families affected following the Tsunami.

Deputy Inspector General of Police Jayantha Wickremaratne, who is in charge of the Police Disaster Management Team Control Centre, Vanni Range DIG Mahinda Beddewela, Trincomalee Senior SP Upali Hewage, and OICs of the area Police stations accompanied the IGP during the Trinco tour.

The affected police stations in the Trincomalee District are Trincomalee Harbour, Kuchchuveli, Uppuveli, Kinniya and Muthur. The IGP ordered to re-locate those police stations in alternative places immediately.

IGP Chandra Fernando yesterday requested the Immigration and Emigration authorities to supply the names and addresses of the foreigners who arrived in Sri Lanka from November 26, 2004 to December 25, 2004.

DIG Wickremaratne will obtain a list of foreigners who left the country before December 26, 2004, in order to ascertain whether they had left the country or not.

The IGP also had deployed a special Police team to trace the whereabouts of the inmates of the Nilaveli Hotel to find out whether how many foreigners had been living at the hotel. DIG Wickremaratne appealed to the public to be vigilant and to inform the special unit of any attempts by miscreants to prey on the innocent victims.

The abandoned vehicles collected by the police yesterday were handed over to their owners after confirming their ownership, DIG Wickremaratne said.

Five air conditioned containers to store bodies until they are claimed by the owners have been brought to Sri Lanka with the help of Foreign Missions.

DIG Wickremaratne had directed all the Officers-in-Charge of police stations in the country to remove all damaged vehicles which were caught in the tsunami to police station premises until they are claimed by the registered owners.

"The police believe that several unscrupulous persons were preparing forged documents to claim these abandoned vehicles," DIG Wickremaratne said.

DIG Wickremaratne ordered the OICs that if two persons claim the same vehicle, to promptly produce them before the Magistrate for an order."

Persons who lost their motor cars and motor cycles following Sunday' tsunami, could contact the police on telephone numbers- 2433671 or 2421111 Ext-141.

DIG Jayantha Wickremaratne said he would be available on telephone numbers - 2441147 - 2421111 Ext-329 or 0722244088 for further information.
