The management of the camps established to temporarily house the Internally Displaced Persons has now been streamlined. The staff responsibility of the camps lies with the Government Agents of each district. Since the establishment of these camps soon after the Tsunami most camps have been managed very efficiently. However, in certain camps pilferage of food and other welfare items have been reported. The security, law and order within certain camps have also posed a problem. The President has decided to enlist the support of the military to streamline the management and to help in maintaining a safe and secure environment within each camp. Also special healthcare, nutrition, sanitation programmes has been developed with guidelines for all camps. Support has been obtained from the humanitarian and other relevant agencies to provide clean drinking water to initiate a new waste disposal system and to ensure proper sanitation. The UNHCR, World Food Programme and other Agencies will help the Ministry of Health in this exercise. Assistance has been obtained from the World Food Programme and other relevant Agencies to provide nutritious food such as canned fish and high energy supplements to augment the dry rations that are being sent from the Ministry of Social Services and the triple 'R' Ministry. Official Camp Managers are now being appointed and their management structure has been strengthened with the help of the military. The CNO will have a close liaison with the camp managers and the military co-ordinators in this effort. |
