Benefits package for tsunami victims

The Government will introduce a special ration coupon system from January 15 to provide relief for the Tsunami victims. The main intention of introducing this system is providing relief for the victims effectively, Cabinet spokesman Minister Mangala Samaraweera said.

Jakarta Summit:

UN in total control of relief work

UN Secretary General Kofi Annan appealed Thursday for almost one billion dollars in cash to tackle the immediate aftermath of the tsunami disaster, as the United States agreed to hand the world body total control of the relief effort.

US Secretary of State Colin Powell will visit the tsunami-ravaged areas of Sri Lanka today. Powell will also meet Sri Lankan leaders for talks on the rehabilitation and reconstruction effort.

Govt to set up Authority for Rebuilding the Nation

The Government will present a Bill to set up an Authority for Rebuilding the Nation in Parliament by the end of January to give legal powers for the Task Force to Rebuild the Nation that is already in force to reconstruct the Tsunami hit areas in the country, Presidential Advisor Mano Tittawella told the media yesterday.

Korean PM here today

Lee Hae-chan, Prime Minister of the Republic of Korea will be in Sri Lanka today and tomorrow. Prime Minister Hae-chan will meet President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse for talks on the tidal wave disaster and bilateral relations.

Govt perturbed over LTTE allegations

A regular extra consignment of food, medicine and other essentials have been sent to the people in the North and East affected by the tsunami disaster since December 27. This is in addition to the regular supplies sent to the people displaced by the military conflict, the Presidential Secretariat said yesterday.
