Maldives elections scheduled for December 31 The Government of Maldives remains deeply committed to enhancing and developing the existing democratic structures in the Maldives. It is convinced of the importance of providing a framework conducive to greater participation by its citizens in the political process. The Government is determined to ensure that the upcoming parliamentary elections scheduled for December 31 are free and fair, and are conducted in accordance with the electoral laws and regulations in the country. The reports of electoral observer groups comprising eminent persons from the South Asian region have, in the past, confirmed the transparent nature of the elections in the Maldives. No Government facilities have ever been used to favour a particular candidate and no State funds have ever been used for electoral campaigns. Apart from them, and eminent persons group from the SAARC countries has been invited to observe the parliamentary elections. The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives too indicated that they would field their own observer team for the elections. The Commonwealth Secretariat has confirmed that an Expert Team would visit the Maldives on December 24 to observe all aspects of the elections. The members of the eminent persons group from countries in the region would begin to arrive in the Maldives starting from December 28. |
