by Chelvatamby Maniccavasagar

The Colombo Young Women's Association organised a special programme titled Kathana Kuthukalam in connection with the Deepavali festival and it was held at the Ramakrishna Mission Hall, Wellawatte presided over by the president of the Association Srimathy Yamuna Ganeshalingam.

On this occasion two cultural programmes were presented namely Narakasura Vatham or Narakasura Sam, Haram and Villuppaatu to entertain the audience. South Indian Tamil actress Srimathy Manorama participated as the chief guest.

Srimathy Manorama who has acted in more than 1,200 films ever since she stepped into the film world said Tamil cinema is by far one of the best developed industries in South India.

From the early 60s and 70s South India has produced a dazzling array of dedicated artistes, brilliant playwrights, enterprising producers and imaginative directors who have immensely contributed for the success and popularity of the Tamil cinema.

She started her drama and film career at the tender age of 15 and still enjoys the reputation of having acted with five Chief Ministers of Tamil Nadu, South India.

While she was acting in dramas she was introduced to the film world by the late popular poet Kannadasan who had composed several lyrics for Tamil movies. The first film in which she acted as comedy actress was "Malai Idda Mangai".

She proudly says that her remarkable achievements in drama and films are due to her mother's constant encouragement and valuable guidance. Whatever prestigious awards she had won in her 45 years of film career are due to her mother's affection and blessings showeverd on her.

Referring to Sri Lanka she said, "it is a beautiful country and people are very magnanimous and hospitable". She further said she visited Sri Lanka in 1969 and also she had acted in a Sinhala film.

She said she was impressed by the performance of the students of "Abhinaya Academy of Bharathanatyam" in the dance drama titled "Narakasura Vatham".

She also said the dance drama "Narakasura Vtham" performed by the students of Abhinaya Academy of Bharatha Natyam is of high standard.

According to Hindu mythology Narakasura, an all powerful demon, was a tyrant king.

He had acquired untold strength through severe penance and he used to harass and terrorise everyone including devas and sages. When they could not bear the tyranny made a complaint and prayed to Lord Krishna and he with his consort Satyabama killed Narakasura and restored peace and dharma.

Kalabhoosana Srimathy Sivakumari Gnanendran an exponent of Bharatha Natyam in Sri Lanka deserves to be congratulated for having trained her students to display all the difficult acting techniques with commendable measure of competence.
