President saddened by Arafat's death

President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga has expressed her heart-felt sympathies on the passing away of Yasser Arafat, the President of the State of Palestine and Leader of the Palestine Liberation Organization.

In a message to Palestine Prime Minister Ahmed Queri, President Kumaratunga states that President Arafat leaves behind a legacy of Palestine emancipation and the role he played in rebuilding the Palestine nation will be difficult to emulate.

President Arafat devoted and eventually sacrificed his life for the cause of Palestine and fought relentlessly throughout his life to uphold the inalienable rights of the Palestine people.

Recalling the particularly warm personal relations that existed between late President Arafat and the late Prime Minister of Sri Lanka Sirimavo Bandaranaike, President Kumaratunga said Sri Lanka was one of the first countries to recognise Palestinian Statehood and has also received President Arafat on Sri Lankan soil on more than one occasion.
