Cycling Cyclone 2004 heading towards Colombo

by Bernard Perera

Cycling Cyclone 2004 organised by Interim Committee for Cycling in Sri Lanka, National Mountain Biking Association and Intermediate Technology Development Group will be held on November 7.

The aim of this event will be to educate the urban masses about the cycle which is considered as a poorman's mode of transport and the sport.

According to organisers the Cycling Cyclone 2004 will prove to the general public of the importance of the cycle.

The push bicycle popular among many in this country deserves a special position. At present it is mostly used by the rural folk for their day to day activities and as a sport during the festive season.

The cycle has many advantages said Yohan Abeynayake of the Intermediate Technology Development Group who joined this act to prove the value of the cycle. It does not pollute the environment. It cuts down your transport cost and also mainly helps keep you healthy. Considering these factors it is necessary to educate the masses about the value of a cycle said Abeynayake.

He added that Sri Lankan use the cycle in many ways, the fish monger, school children (specially the rural folk), the newspaper boy and many others make use of this vehicle. To day it has become important for everyone to think of the present situation especially the environment and the transport problem faced by the people of Sri Lanka.

"This can be overcome if more and more people use this two wheeler which also can serve as an automatic exercise which is important for a person who is highly engaged in their work. This exercises keep the users healthy."
