by Ranil Wijayapala A Police curfew was imposed in Mannar yesterday as two LTTE offices in Thalaimannar and Pesalai came under attack by angry Muslims protesting over the killing of a Muslim allegedly by the LTTE on Thursday night. Military and Police sources said yesterday that reinforcements were rushed to the Thalaimannar area on Thursday night as hundreds of Muslims gathered to protest the killing. According to military sources I.F. Saleem who was in the company of M.S. Badurdeen, residents of Pesalai area, were shot at while they were travelling by motorcycle by gunmen who followed them in a motorcycle on the Thalaimannar road around 8.30 pm. Saleem was killed on the spot in the shooting. The incident took place between Dudavai and Kasal junction on the Thalaimannar road, military sources added. According to sources in Mannar, all property and items in the two LTTE offices in Thalaimannar and Pesalai were destroyed by the protesting Muslims. However, no LTTEer was injured in the incident, reports added. The Police supported by the Navy personnel in the area took effective measures to defuse the situation, the sources added. The Police curfew was imposed in the area from 6 am last morning to prevent the escalation of incidents in the area. The Security Forces, Police, LTTE representatives, the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission, Muslim and Catholic religious dignitaries and the Government Agent in Mannar had discussions yesterday to restore normality to the area. According to military sources, the area remained calm yesterday as the Police curfew was in force. |
