30th National Sports Festival: Muthunayake betters her own record Chris Dhambarage reporting from Badulla. M. M. D. Muthunayake of North Western Province established a new meet record in the women's shot putt final on the penultimate day of the 30th National Sports Festival track and field events worked off at the Vincent Dias Stadium, Badulla yesterday. In a close contest for the gold medal Muthunayake edged out her closest rival Padma Nandani Wijesundera of Sabaragamuwa Province with a performance of 12.80 metres. She bettered her own record of 12.71 metres set during the 1999 Sports Festival. In fact Muthunayake is also the holder of the Sri Lanka record having cleared a distance of 13.31 metres in 2000. In the men's triple jump Nishan Kumara of Western Province took the gold medal with an effort of 15.48 metres. Sampath Weerasinghe of North Western Province who won this event last year had to be satisfied with the silver medal with a performance of 15.38 metres. Netball Western Province clinched the gold medal in the netball tournament defeating North Western Province 56-38 in the final worked off at Badulla yesterday. The winners led 17-8 in the first quarter but lost the second 11-13. Western Province won the third quarter 14-6 and added the finishing touches with a 14-11 win in the fourth and final quarter. Niroshini Samandrika of Western Province was named best player in the tournament. The champion Western Province team included Manojika Priyadarshani, Gayathri Lankatilleke, Arunika Kuruwitage, Sashika Samarasinghe, C. Prasila, R. Karunaratne and C. Perera. Kabaddi Sabaragamuwa Province won the gold medal in the women's kabaddi tournament worked off at the Pradeshiya Saba grounds, Hali Ela. They beat Western Province in the final encounter. Meanwhile defending champions Western Province took the lead in the overall medals tally with a total of 32 gold medals. They also have collected 34 silver medals and 21 bronze medals. Central Province is placed second with a total of 11 golds, 14 silvers and 17 bronze medals. Southern Province are placed third with a total of six golds, five silvers and 14 bronze medals. North Central Province have won five gold medals, four silver medals and two bronze medals. Sabaragamuwa Province have won five gold medals, four silver medals and two bronze medals. North Western Province have won five gold medals, three silver medals and two bronze medals. Uva Province have won only one gold medal and three bronze medals while North Central Province have won just two bronze medals. Results 10,000m Women (final): (1) S. N.
