Emirates SkyCargo opens Colombo office Emirates SkyCargo opened its office in Colombo, considering the growth in cargo volumes over the past two years and the contribution it makes to the airline's turnover. The new office located in 'Hemas' House in Colombo 2, will enable faster processing of customer requirements, with dedicated counters for exports, imports, cargo reservations and telephone sales. Combined with web-based facilities for booking and tracking of cargo via the internet, the new office enhances Emirates SkyCargo's capacity to serve the requirements of major business sectors such as the garments industry which exports ready-made garments and textiles to Europe and USA. SkyCargo Colombo is one of the biggest service providers to exporters of perishables cargo such as fresh fruit and vegetables to Europe, USA and Japan. Speaking at the opening of the office last week, Emirates Area Manager, Sri Lanka and the Maldives Tissa Bibile said: 'inaugurating this new office in the midst of challenges facing our industry, is a reflection of our growth and it is a long term strategy. "We understand that even as our web-based innovations deliver new service levels to our customers, the 'human touch' that comes from direct interaction remains very important," he said. He pointed out that although last year was a challenging year for the industry worldwide, Emirates SkyCargo did not reduce capacity or employees. "Emirates SkyCargo held its nerve, adding a Boeing 747-200F and inaugurating nine new freighter routes. This year Emirates SkyCargo has already launched belly-hold services to seven destinations to Lagos, Accra, Shanghai, Glasgow, Vienna, New York and Christchurch and freighter services to Budapest and Milan. Our freighters now serve 21 destinations, of which seven are cargo-only routes," Bibile said. The opening of the new SkyCargo office follows steady growth in cargo revenues out of Colombo. According to Emirates Cargo Manager Sri Lanka and Maldives Damian Jayasuriya, cargo revenue grew 27 per cent in April-July over the corresponding period last year, following the launch of operations to New York's John F Kennedy airport. "The non-stop operation from Dubai to New York has been so successful that it is a challenge to keep up with demand," he said. Emirates SkyCargo which has a global reputation for leading the industry in innovation, flexibility and service, now serves 77 destinations in 54 countries in Europe, North America, Middle East, Africa, the Indian subcontinent and the Far East. |
