Kandy-CH rugby match on August 1 by S. M. Jiffrey Abdeen - Kandy Sports Correspondent The key Caltex League Rugby fixture between the defending champions Kandy Sports Club and the challengers CH & FC which was scheduled to be played on Saturday - July 31st will not be played on this day as it is a Full Moon Poya Day and this match will be now played on Sunday, August 1st at the Nittawela Stadium at 5 p.m. The Secretary of Kandy Sports Club Mahes Weerasinghe said that a request by CH & FC to play this match on Friday could not be accommodated as the Randoli Perahera of Kandy's Esala Maha Perahera is now in progress and transport for the spectators could be a problem with the closure of certain roads and the termination of bus services at Mahaiyawa end and the Ampitiya end near the Children's Park. The spectators may get stranded. Further a large number of policemen will be deployed for the Randoli Perahera and the Club will not be able to provide adequate security inside and outside the grounds. Therefore it will be only prudent to play this match on Sunday August 1 by that time the Esala Perahera would have been concluded. Kandy Sports Club sources also said that the Vice President of Kandy Sports Club Priyantha Ekanayake had explained the security concern to the Rugby Chairman of CH & FC Ranjan Kanagasabai and in the best interest of all concerned that this match should be played after the Esala Perahera which is drawing large crowds at present. We would also like to mention that as hosts Kandy Sports Club has looked into the security at all matches played at Nittawela which had not seen any improper conduct by the spectators during the matches played at Nittawela for a long time. Apart from the good crowd behaviour, the officials of the Kandy Sports Club has been providing excellent security inside and outside the grounds by deploying a large posse of policemen which includes dogs from the Police Kennels in Kandy and also a riot squad stands to meet any contingency. This kind of security is not provided at any rugby playing venue in the island. |
