No private bus fare hike

Private bus operators will not increase fares this month.

The National Transport Commission (NTC) said yesterday that representatives of private bus unions who met Commission's Chairman Prof. Amal Kumarage at his office on Monday agreed to suspend the proposed bus fare hike. Under the National Transport Policy, private bus owners were entitled to increase bus fares by 3.06 per cent this month.

The NTC press release said at Monday's meeting, union representatives agreed to postpone the fare hike for a future date. The future fare revision will be made after considering the contemporary operational costs including diesel price and the cost of spares.

One day service for driving licences

The Motor Traffic Department has made arrangements to issue driving licences within one day for persons who have lost their original licences.

Under the program which will be launched from August 2, licences would first be issued to persons whose original licences were issued after June 12, 1997 or are of a number starting with the letter A.

Those who wish to obtain a new copy of the licence are required to come to the Department with the National Identity Card, a copy of the police entry confirming loss of driving licence, a certificate and two photos authorised by the Grama Niladhari and a medical certificate from the National Transport Medical Institute if it is a heavy vehicle licence.

The service will be available from 9.30 am to 12.30 pm for Rs 1000.
