by Asanga Warnakulasuriya The Army and Navy Commanders yesterday pledged that the Armed Forces will continue to uphold the truce with great patience as they have done in the past and will work with commitment towards having the LTTE at the negotiating table for forging a permanent and viable peace. Army Commander Lt. General Shantha Kottegoda who met Navy Commander Vice Admiral Daya Sandagiri at the Navy Headquarters following the guard of honour accorded to him, said he had given strict orders to Army officers to carry out their duties with great forbearance. Lt. General Kottegoda stressed that it is not only upto the Government and the Armed Forces to realise the importance of a lasting solution, but also to the LTTE. The LTTE must be more participatory in the security council meetings in North and East and discuss their issues, he added.Naval Commander Vice Admiral Sandagiri said the Armed Forces and the Police were well equipped and geared to face any challenge or threat to Sri Lanka's national security. "We have also made several technical improvisations within the Navy," he added. The Navy had also requested the Customs to release hi-tech communication and monitoring equipment imported by the LTTE to monitor the Armed Forces to the Navy, the Commander said. Commenting on Sea Tiger training in the North-East, Commander Sandagiri said even though the Ceasefire Agreement was in progress, both parties were engaged in training. "In fact, to know the LTTE is training their Sea Tigers is an advantage from an intelligence point of view to motivate Naval officers to intensify and adopt modern methods in their training," he said. |
