Asian Grand Prix Second Leg: Manjula Kumara goes over new height, sets new SL record by Dinesh Weerawansa High jumper Manjula Kumara Wijesekera, sprinters Susanthika Jayasinghe and Rohan Pradeep Kumara Fernando kept the lion flag flying high at the second leg of the Asian Grand Prix 2004 series which concluded at Sugathadasa Stadium, Colombo last night.
They won their respective events while Prasanna Amarasekera (second in men's 200m), Damayanthi Darsha (third in women's 400m) and men's 4 x 400m relay team (third) too made their presence felt. Olympic medallist Jayasinghe faced an unexpected challenge though she ran a better race than she did in Thailand four days ago. The most thrilling event for the day was women's 200m, an event which is generally important to the hosts Sri Lanka. The 28-year-old Lankan lass, who won the first leg in Thai Grand Prix with a timing of 23.42 seconds, was given a close fight by Uzbekistan's Lyubov Perepelova, who clocked the identical time of 23.38 seconds. However, the Sydney Olympics women's 200m bronze medallist survived a close call to win in a photo finish. Guzel Khubbieva (UZB - 23.52) came third.
Gennadiy Chernovol of Kazakhstan and Luy Bov Perepelova of Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest man and woman respectively. Chernovol clocked 10.50 seconds to win the men's 100m ahead of Saudi Arabia's Yahya H.I. Habeeb (10.59) and Sri Lanka's Joy Dhanushka Perera (10.64) who secured the second and third places respectively. Meanwhile, Perepelova returned a time of 11.38secs. to win women's 100m while Guzel Khubbieva of Uzbekistan won the second place clocking 11.54 seconds. Sri Lanka's Manjula Kumara Wijesekera cleared 2.25m to set up a new Sri Lanka national mark to the win men's high jump. Besides Wijesekera and Jayasinghe, the only other Lankan to secure a first place is Rohan Pradeep Kumara Fernando, who retained the men's 400m title he won at the first leg in Songkla. Fernando clocked 45.78 seconds to win in style without much challenge from his closest rivals Indian Manoj Lal K.J. (46.75) and Saudi Arabia's Khalid K.B. Salim (47.48), who secured the second and third places respectively.
India won men's 4 x 400m men's relay to keep their Olympic chances alive. Second-placed Sri Lanka clocked a better timing than they registered at the first leg in Songkla on Wednesday. Improving on their timing of 3mts 5.10 seconds, Sri Lanka team clocked 3:04.46 to finish behind India once more. The Indians returned a time of 3:04.30 to keep their chances alive of a place in the Athens Olympics. Sri Lanka's chances of making it to the summer Olympics looked slim, unless they come out with a superlative performance in Manila on July 1. Sri Lanka's men's 400m relay team badly felt the absence of injured Sugath Tillakaratne, who normally does the anchor lap. Rohan Pradeep Kumara gave a considerable lead as Ranga Wimalawansa capitalised on the second. Even when Rohitha Pushpakumara gave the baton to Prasanna Amarasekera for the final lap, Sri Lanka had a close lead. But soldier Amarasekera could not stand the pressure which was too much for him. Tracia Roberts of Thailand, who won all four meets in last year's Asian Grand Prix and finished third in last Wednesday's Thai Grand Prix, painted a poor picture in finishing last - eighth with a timing of 16.82, far bellow her standards. B.G.L. Madhuwanthi (15.58 seconds), M.M. Kalupahana (16.34), Inoka Umayangani (16.54) finished fifth, sixth and seventh respectively in women's 100m hurdles. The event was won by China's Feng Yun (13.24 sec), followed by her team mate Su Uping (13.62). RESULTS: MEN: 100m: Gennadiy Chernovol (KAZ) 10.50 secs, 2. Yahya H.I. Habeeb (KSA) 10.59 secs., 3.
