Govt's economic plans to be announced within next two weeks - Minister Amunugama

by Asela Kuruluwansa

The economic plans of the United People's Freedom Alliance Government will be announced within the next two weeks and the maiden budget will be presented in Parliament in November this year, stated Finance Minister Dr. Sarath Amunugama.

Addressing a media briefing after paying a courtesy call on the new Mahanayake of the Malwatte Chapter, the Most Ven. Thibbatuwawe Sri Siddhartha Sumangala Maha Nayaka Thera, in Kandy on June 24, he denied the existence of any crisis in his Ministry as made out by the opposition.

The Minister said he will not make any concessions to tax dodgers and smugglers backed by politicians and that the Government will bear the cost of subsidising the importation of petroleum without putting on the consumer, the burden of increased oil prices in the world market.

He said arrangements have been completed to give permanent appointments to unemployed graduates.

The Minister urged unemployed graduates not to be perturbed by false statements made by the antagonistic parties in this regard.
