Roofing sheets scam: 

Application by AG to obtain copies of confessions allowed

Colombo Additional Magistrate Miss Amalee Ranaweera on Tuesday allowed an application by the Attorney General to obtain copies of the confessions made by the three suspects in the alleged roofing sheets fraud case.

At the outset, State Counsel Damith Totawatta submitted to court that the investigators had made a request to the Attorney General to peruse the confessions made before the Magistrate by the three suspects in the case and advise them on what action should be taken against them.

Nalinda Indatissa, senior counsel for the first suspect in the case, Kotte Municipal Councillor Anton Perera Jayasuriya requested the court to direct the Attorney General to consider the application for bail in respect of his client on the next date.

The three suspects who made the confessions are M.A. Mohamed Rizan of Grandpass, Mohamed Shiraz of Colombo 12 and Susantha Kumara of Colombo 14. All four suspects were further remanded till July 5.

Ajith Pathirana, senior counsel for second and third suspects submitted to court that his clients made confessions and will assist the investigators and to make them State witnesses.

Senior Counsel Indatissa further submitted to court that his client's wife is suffering from an acute mental condition and it was aggravated after the suspect was taken into custody.

Due to the mental condition of the mother, their infant baby was suffering without proper attention. At present an uncle of the suspect is looking after the infant baby.

Nalinda Indatissa with Dilrukshi Fernando and A.B.C. Mendis appeared for the Municipal Councillor.

Ajith Pathirana with Suraj Kongalage and A. Dharmapriya appeared for the second and third suspects while Priyankara Walawe appeared for the fourth suspect.

Investigations into the alleged fraud of Rs.20 million galvanized roofing sheets imported from India is being directed by CCD Director Senior SP Sarath Lugoda assisted by ASP Palitha Fernando, Inspector Nuwan Wedasinghe, OIC, CCD, SI R.M.A. Rajapaksa and a team of officers of the CCD.
