Railway Dept. needs 10 more power sets, 50 compartments by Anura Maitipe The Railway Department needs 10 more power sets and 50 compartments to provide a smooth service to commuters. This was revealed during a discussion between the Transport Minister, Felix Perera and top brass of the Railway Department, official sources told the Daily News. Trains provide transport to 300,000 commuters daily in addition to transporting oil, goods and mail, the sources added. Power sets are specially made for short distance operations which require fast acceleration at frequent intervals to transport commuters and these trains mainly operate from Colombo to Kurunegala, Ambepussa, Polgahawela, Mirigama, Panadura, Galle, Chilaw and Avissawella, they said. In addition, normal trains operate daily from Colombo to Kandy, Mahawa, Badulla, Matara and Vavuniya. The Railway Department has found it difficult to upgrade the train services due to lack of sufficient train engines and compartments, sources added. The Railway Department has a mass of unusable scrap iron in its yards and with the sale of these scrap iron, the department could earn millions of rupees. The revenue could be utilised to develop the railway, the sources said. |
