by Sarath Manula Wickrama, Anuradhapura special correspondent The Maha Vihara project of Anuradhapura has discovered a set of Chinese ceramic plates at the excavation of the East side out wall of Ruwanweliseya. The project is conducting an archaeological conservation program for the out wall of the pagoda. At the excavation these plates were found in clay pots placed at the last reconstruction level of the wall in the ancient time, in accordance with Mahawansa, said Prof. T. G. Kulatunge director Mahavihara project. A few plates of the same type had been discovered earlier at the same site and the archaeology Director-General of China has proved that previous set belongs to Chinese history and for the relevant era. Prof. Kulatunge further told the Daily News that those are compared with the era of Maha Parakramabahu in Polonnaruwa kingdom. The previous set of plates could be found with sprinkler (Pen kendi) made of conch shells, and that means those entities had been placed after an almsgiving done pouring water with a conch. With this discovery the relationship between Sri Lanka and China from ancient times is established in the 12th century in the way of commercial and religious affairs. |
