| News Business Features Editorial Security Politics World Letters Sports Obituaries | Top priority for developing road network - PM by Duminda Guruge Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse, who assumed duties as the Minister of Highways after performing religious observances at the Ministry yesterday, pledged to develop the country's road network as a top priority. He said that a fresh Roads Development Act will be introduced in Parliament to achieve this end and that under the Act, a Road Development Advisory Board will be established to carry out research work to bring about an environmental-friendly road network that will ensure road safety and minimise road accidents. Though only 13 per cent of the entire road network come under his Ministry, the Highways Ministry has the responsibility of developing the roads coming under the Provincial Councils, Urban Councils and Pradeshiya Sabhas, a responsibility, the Ministry undertakes with responsibility, he said. "Transport difficulties is one of the major drawbacks standing in the way to rural development. Several Road Development Projects initiated during the previous PA regime were abandoned during the past two years. There are several Bridge Construction Projects and three Express Ways among them. They have to be revived.We have a capable staff under this Ministry. I hope they will cooperate with us to shoulder this responsibility", said the Premier. Highways Deputy Minister T.B.Ekanayake also addressed the gathering. Ministry Secretary S.Amarasekera delivered the welcome address. Ministers Dinesh Gunawardena and Ferial Asraff, WP Governor Alavi Mowlana and MPs Jagath Pushpakumara were presented. |
