Avurudu sweetmeats by village damsels
There is no Avurudu sans traditional sweetmeats in any part of Sri Lanka. The laborious and time-consuming task of preparing them that we witnessed during our childhood days in the village was however memorable.Preparing Kevum, Kokis and Aasmi is no easy task especially in the city due to the busy household chores. Children in the city today are denied these simple joys.This feat has been however revived at the Perera and Sons Avurudu stall at Havelock Town, Colombo from April 7 to 12 where Kevum or Kokis is prepared on the spot by skilled village damsels while you wait. It’s indeed a treat to watch them turn out these sweetmeats which all relish. (Picture by Ruwan de silva)
