Acting Dean wounded in shooting

Two unidentified gunmen shot and critically wounded the Acting Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture of the Eastern University, Dr. T. Thiruchelvam on Tuesday night.
The victim is being treated at the ICU of Batticaloa Hospital.
According to Police, the incident took place at around 8.00 p.m. on Tuesday while the Professor was with his family at his residence in Kolludi. The assailants had arrived on a motor bike.
The shooters were fired from a 9mm pistol. Two bullets had hit him in the thigh, Police said. According to Police, students of the Eastern University had participated in a recent demonstrations which was held in support of the breakaway LTTE Eastern Commander, Karuna.
Meanwhile, the Eastern University Teacher's Association condemned the shooting describing it as a cowardly act.
Chenkaladi Police are conducting further investigations to ascertain whether any LTTE cadres were involved in the shooting.
Meanwhile, the staff of the Eastern University vehemently condemn this uncivilised, inhuman violent act, states a press release.
The release adds: Targeting an academic of a University which is the highest seat of education in a country, we consider the most uncivilised and inhuman act, not merely against a person but against the whole academic world.
"Though it being considered a peaceful atmosphere, what has been inflicted upon Dr. Thiruchelvan, becomes proof that human security has no guarantee in this land at present. Here, we request to all responsible authorities to ensure law and order and human security.
We request that concerned authorities initiate necessary judaical inquiries immediately, to bring the culprits to book, and meet out justice and provide safeguards to academic community. We also urge that such atrocious acts that could lead to the destruction of the academic community should not be repeated.
Subsequent to the shooting of Dr. T. Thiruchelvam, the Acting Vice-chancellor called for a meeting of all deans of Faculties, Heads of Departments, Senior Lecturers and Head of other Units.
In that meeting all those members who were present adopted the following statement to be released to the media. Hence the statement of the staff and others who met to-gather is being released to the press.
