UPFA in meeting with Police Commission seeks:

Tough action against biased policemen

United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) leaders yesterday urged the National Police Commission (NPC) to take punitive action against police officers who are politically biased during the elections campaign.

UPFA representatives Susil Premajayantha, Wimal Weerawansa and Dinsesh Gunawardena who met NPC Chairman Ranjit Abeysuriya, PC, brought to his notice several instance where police officers had been biased towards United National Front candidates.

UPFA sources said the Commission members agreed to look into their complaints and take appropriate action.

UPFA sources said their representatives highlighted the rising number of elections-related incidents. They said many of their candidates and supporters have been harassed and intimidated by United National Front activists.

They emphasised the importance of police impartiality during elections, but noted that several police officers had not acted impartially.

The UPFA leaders specifically mentioned the conduct of the Welikada Police who they said had acted partially towards the UNP candidate in the area in a case involving UPFA candidate Wimal Weerawansa.

The UPFA has demanded a full investigation into this incident from the NPC of some of the latest incidents. In one such incident, an election propaganda office of the Freedom Alliance, located at the Pitakotte junction was attacked by a group of thugs on Wednesday night.

According to the complaint to the police, the group of thugs who came in a Hi-Ace van fled after damaging the office and toppling the chairs in it. The attackers have also broken the red and blue banners hung on galvanized pipes by bending them, said Headquarters Inspector Quintus Raymond, OIC, Mirihana Police.
