Magistrate warns suspects

Colombo Additional Magistrate Ranjan Dissanayake on Thursday severely warned eight suspects produced before Court in connection with the attack on Minister Ravi Karunanayake's office, not to be involved with violence and allow the election to be held peacefully without being misguided by politicians.

The Magistrate observed that police should have acted in a more responsible manner.

The Magistrate directed Welikada Police to conduct further investigations in connection with the alleged involvement of Wimal Weerawansa and Vijitha Herath.

If there is evidence that they were involved in the attack, they should be arrested and produced before court, the Magistrate said.

Welikada Police on Thursday produced two suspects, Priyath Thusith Gunasekera and S. Senpathy Kahawita in connection with unlawful assembly and threatening employees of Karunanayke's office, pointed a revolver at a lawyer who was at Karunanayake's office and damaging the office.

After submission by President's Counsel Ananda Wijesekera, senior counsel for the prosecution, Defence Counsel G.G.Y.Keerthiratne, the Magistrate remanded Gunasekera till March 25 and granted bail for Kahawita. He was ordered to furnish cash bail in Rs.2,000 and a bond of Rs.50,000 with a surety.

Sub Inspector Dissanayake of the Crime Section of Welikada Police submitted a 'B'report and said the first suspect was alleged to have pointed a pistol at a lawyer who was at Karunanayake's office and threatened to kill him.

In another case, Welikada Police produced six suspects who allegedly, possessed 11 9mm live bullets. They are M. Jayasinghe Ratnayake, M. Karunaratne Perera, M.M. Edirisinghe, Kavindra Kumar Weerasinghe, Bandula Nanayakkara and M. Nihal Amerainghe.

SI Dissanayake who produced the suspects said Police found the live bullets inside the three wheeler in which the suspects were travelling.

After submissions by Police and the Counsel the Magistrate remanded the suspects till March 22 and directed Police to submit a comprehensive report in connection with investigations about the incident on the next date.

President's Counsel Ananda Wijesekera with A.W. Nissanka, Lakshman Ranasinghe, Methsiri Paranavitharana, Janaprith Fernando, Nanda Gunaratne and Mahes Kalugampitiya appeared for the prosecution with Welikada Police.

G.G.Y. Keerthiratne, Ranjith Caldera and Rexi Piyadasa appeared for the suspects.
