President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga has sent a message of condolence to King Juan Carlos I of Spain on the bomb tragedy which killed 192 and injured more than 1400. The President's message: "I was shocked and saddened to hear the news of the multiple bomb attacks in Madrid on Thursday March 11, 2004, killing 192 and injuring more than 1,400 innocent people. The Government and the people of Sri Lanka condemn in the strongest terms, this dastardly act of terrorism committed during the rush hour with the deliberate intention of harming innocent lives. We strongly urge that those responsible for this heinous crime be brought to justice early. Sri Lanka understands fully the horror and pain which follow such attacks, herself having been a victim of terrorist acts for over two decades. We strongly feel that renewed and concerted international action is essential to eliminate this scourge of terrorism posing a common threat to us all. On behalf of the Government and people of Sri Lanka, please accept Your Majesty, my deepest sympathy at this time of national grief, and convey my sincere condolences to the families of the bereaved and the wounded in these terrorist attacks." Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has expressed his deepest condolences to Spanish President Jose Maria Aznar on the multiple bomb attacks in Madrid, on Thursday. He has condemned the dastardly act of terrorism that killed 192 people and left more than 1,400 wounded. In the condolence message the Prime Minister said: "I was deeply shocked to receive the sad news of the multiple bomb attack that took place in Madrid on Thursday on the eve of the Spanish general elections. The Government and the people of Sri Lanka strongly condemn this dastardly act of terrorism that killed at least 192 innocent people and left more than 1,400 injured. We strongly hope that those responsible for this heinous crime will be brought to justice in the near future. These terrible attacks highlight more than ever the common threat faced by us from terrorism, and the need of the hour to work together internationally to ensure our safety. Sri Lanka, who has herself been a victim of terrorism for several decades, stands resolutely with Spain and the world in the continuing fight against terrorism in all its forms. On behalf of the Government and the people of Sri Lanka please accept Excellency, my deepest sympathy at this hour of grief, and also convey my sincere condolences to the families of the bereaved and those injured in these terrible attacks". |
