Peiris' recent claim that "all imports will be restricted and the Rs. 4.5 billion aid pledged, to the country will be lost in the event of a Freedom Alliance victory at the forthcoming election as a deliberate deception to mislead the masses. Mr. Perera in a press release issued yesterday said Prof. Peiris was making such unfounded statements to overcome the serious plight to which he and his party had fallen today in the face of imminent defeat staring at them at the forthcoming election. The release said that nowhere had the Freedom Alliance stated that it would restrict imports in the event of its victory at the forthcoming election. The Alliance has no plans whatsoever to sever links with international banks and lending agencies. The UNP was resorting to various rumours to bring the Freedom Alliance to disrepute. The release said the recent seizure by police of a large stock of posters ridiculing the Freedom Alliance leadership is another incident which proves the helpless situation to which the government had fallen. People like Prof. Peiris should know that people of this country could not be deceived by such childish statements. "While inviting the UNP leadership for an open debate on policies, I would request Prof. Peiris and others to study Freedom Alliance policies well before making such statements," Mr. Perera said in his release. |
