Batticaloa and key towns in East at standstill

Life in Batticaloa, Ampara and Valachchenai in the East, came to a
standstill yesterday as shops, schools and government offices were closed
reportedly as a mark of support to breakaway LTTE Eastern Commander Karuna,
Police and Security reports stated.
No mercy for corrupt Ministers - President
President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga said that under a Freedom
Alliance Government, any Minister found guilty of corruption, fraud or
theft will have no mercy, but will be sacked within 24 hours.
PM promises special agri-zones in selected areas

establish special agricultural zones in selected areas for producing
agro-products exclusively catering to the export market.
