New violence hits Indian Kashmir
SRINAGAR, India, Wednesday (AFP)
New violence flared in revolt-racked Indian Kashmir when suspected Islamic militants shot dead three people, including a Muslim couple, police said Wednesday.
Gunmen broke into the house of Abdul Khaliq Bhat and killed him and his wife, Raja Begum, overnight in the village of Chewdara in the central Kashmir district of Budgam, said a police spokesman who blamed rebels for the killings.
The slayings came after the Indian army killed a suspected member of the region's dominant rebel group, Hizbul Mujahedin, in the couple's house last December.
Violence has continued in the region despite peace moves by India and Pakistan aimed at ending the 14-year uprising against Indian rule in Jammu and Kashmir that has killed tens of thousands of people.
