Windies Juniors in convincing victory
by Chris Dhambarage
The touring West Indies under 19 team opened their tour of Sri Lanka with a convincing 43 run win over the Sri Lanka Cricket President's XI in a one day practice match played at Braybrooke Place yesterday.
The visitors batting first compiled a formidable 260 for 8 from their 50 overs and then bowled out the home side for 217 in the 48th over.
The entire top order of the West Indies team struck early form with Xavier Marshall, Tishan Maraj and Jonathan Augustus all making useful contributions.
Even though none of them scored a half century they collected their runs at a steady pace scoring well over five runs per over.
The President's XI were cruising along at one stage with former D. S. Senanayake skipper Kanchana Gunawardena leading the run chase.
Gunawardena hit a top score of 88 off 119 balls with one six and ten boundaries. He put on 76 for the fourth wicket with Sandun Dias (36) and added a further 71 runs for the fifth wicket along with Anton Livera.
But with the departure of Gunwardena the innings completely lost their way with Lionel Baker, Barrington Earwood and Zamal Khan adding the finishing touches with the ball.
