The Defence Ministry contradicted a report appearing in yesterday's Island. Secretary, Ministry of Defence Cyril Herath in a press release said that the attention of the Defence Ministry has been drawn to the news item in the Island newspaper today under the headline 'Govt. defies Defence Ministry Directives'. This is totally incorrect. On a request made by the Peace Secretariat which is under the Prime Minister for transporting some members of the LTTE from Kilinochchi to Katunayake by a Sri Lankan Air Force helicopter, the Defence Ministry with the approval of the President granted the necessary permission both for the transport and security of the LTTE members as has been done previously, the Secretary said. The procedure relating to their departure through the airport is entirely a matter for the Peace Secretariat and the Ministry of Civil Aviation. The Defence Ministry did not give any directive in regard to this matter, he said. |
