Doctor claims sweet success for diabetes cure

by Ananda Kannangara

A foreign qualified Sri Lankan medical doctor who last week revealed a rare treatment for diabetes will open a hospital for diabetic patients on February 19.

The hospital at No. 410/01, Gatabuwana Road, Miriswatta, Piliyandala will be named 'Sirimavo Bandaranaike Hospital for Diabetes Treatment.'

"Since this medicine can be regarded as the first of its kind ever found in the world to cure diabetes permanently, I have decided to name the hospital after the world's first woman Prime Minister," Dr. Lanka Jayasekara told the Daily News in an exclusive interview.

"It took nearly six years for me to carry out numerous experiments on this medicine and during the last five years I have cured nearly 130 patients," he said.

Dr. Jayasekara said he frequently keeps in touch with half of the diabetic patients cured by him and according to them, they are now fully recovered.

"However, a team of medical consultants led by Dr. Dayan Jayatillaka are expected to issue a full report on the treatment given to these patients and their response to the public in due course," he said.

Dr. Jayasekara said patients who are fully cured, will never get side effects. Their blood sugar count does not exceed 120 units and they are healthier than they were previously.

"After completing the full four to six months course of medicine depending on the conditions of the blood sugar level, the patient can consume any kind of sweets, food or even liquor," he said.

Dr. Jayasekara said the medicine manufactured by using the sap of 21 varieties of herbal plants is given to patients in oil form.

"I have informed about the details of my experiments to the President and the Health Minister and also prepared to disclose it to experts on behalf of patients who need the treatment urgently," he said.

Jayasekara said during the days he was a diabetic patient his life was saved by Dr. Sarath Gamini Silva at the General hospital, Colombo.

"I have also decided to collect details of diabetic patients from February 1 to 19," he added.
