Ancient Buddhist site surfaces

by J. Gunadasa Jayawickrema - Galewela group correspondent

An ancient site of historical Buddhist ruins and artifacts have surfaced at Meewalapathaha, in Pahalawewa area about 1 1/2Kms off Galewela-Dambulla main road at the foot of Beliyakanda hill.

Ven. Dembawe Gunananda Thera, the resident bhikkhu of this place of ancient Buddhist worship has written to the authorities of the Archaeology Department as well as the political authority of the area seeking protection and restoration for the valuable artifacts.

There is an abandoned dagoba covered by grass and a stone slab '10 x 3 1/2' believed to be a Malasana (stone-slab to offer flowers). A broken flat-stone has two foot-prints (sripathul). There is a moonstone without animal figures. Crude stone pillars about 15 in number are scattered over the land.

About 20 feet to the west of the dagoba there is a foundation of a building believed to be a Buddha's shrine room. There are four stone pillars about 3 feet high around this. Another site of a shrine room is found about 100 feet away from the dagoba. There is a flat stone with a cavity dug-up on it. This could be a basement stone on which wooden posts were planted to build the structure.

Treasure hunters attempted to un-earth valuables from the ancient dagoba in the year 1997. The resident thera reported it to the then Cultural Minister Lakshman Jayakody.
